Have you
forgotten the sometimes overlooked items that need your immediate
attention this spring? Many people consider spring cleaning to be a
chance to air out rugs and clean curtains, but other areas in house
could use some spring cleaning to keep them in good condition. The
mechanical systems in your home, such as air conditioning and plumbing
fixtures work hard all year round. Take the time to clean them properly
to ensure your house stays in good working order.
Common
areas to check:
Air conditioning equipment should be checked and the
filter should be replaced.
If you have a dehumidifier, allow it to dry out
completely. Then clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
At the very least, you should change any filters and vacuum underneath
the cover after it has dried.
For bathroom spring cleaning, check the faucets for signs
of rust or leaking. Remove the handles and clean with a rust remover as
needed.
Remove the guard on the bathroom fans and clean with a
toothbrush to remove any dust and dirt. Also check for any signs of mold
or mildew in the bathroom and clean promptly.
Safety equipment should also be checked during your
spring cleaning. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen
and it is in good working order. Smoke detectors and carbon dioxide
detectors should have their batteries replaced and their units vacuumed
to maintain them.
Now is also the time to examine window screens for small
holes and tears that can allow insects into your home. Use household
cement to fix small holes, or cut and sew a patch to fix the problem.
While you’re outside doing other spring cleaning
projects, take a look at your rain gutters. Make sure that they are
cleaned of debris, but also that they are functioning properly and
firmly fixed to the house.
